Free Technical Repair Tip Laptop Computer Power Jack Repair: portable computers have power jacks soldered to a circuit board--so they break easily & it is difficult to find a replacement that matches the circuit board! A "nut-mounted coaxial power jack" can be installed with wire from the circuit board to a hole you drill in the case: PH-247, PH-248, CR-30-310, CR-30-311, CR-30-314, CR-30-315. You may need to change your power supply connector to match the jack you select.

Glossary of Computer Terms
10BaseT: an 8-contact RJ45 connector found on modems.
286 These 10Mhz processor computers can connect to other computers at 9600 baud.
386 This type of computer could connect to other computers using a 14.4K modem.
486 This computer typically operated at 66Mhz and could use a 28.8K modem for internet connections.
586 "Pentium" computers are compatible with 56K modems for internet connections to other computers.
Bits and Bytes Computers use 8 bits to a byte (letter, number or punctuation mark).
Centronics was an early manufacturer of printers that used a 36 contact Cinch plug on their printers. Other manufacturers copied them so this connector became known as a "Centronics" plug; a pair of spring-wire anap-clips hold it to the panel mounted jack. Old printers use cables with a DB25 plug at the computer and this 36-contact plug on the printer. Bi-Directional printer cables have 25 conductor wire (so the printer can tell the computer to stop sending when the printers buffer memory is full); unidirectional printer cables have 18 wires.
Component Video "Yipper" Cables are color coded Red, Blue, and Green.
This format has Color information, sync pulses, and brightness separated into different wires.
When used without any other qualifications the term component video usually refers to analog Y/Pb/Pr component video with sync and luma.
The Green cable contains "Y" (luma=brightness) signals.
Blue cable contains Pb.
Red cable contains Pr.
Component-video cables do not carry audio and may be paired with audio cables.
Composite Video Cables are color coded Yellow.and have all the video information (brightness, color, sync pulses) combined into a single line-level signal for analog (NTSC, PAL, or SECAM) television.
Composite-video cables do not carry audio and are often paired with audio cables. often combined with Stereo Audio [Red=Right Channel] and White (or Black) [Left Channel] cables.
DSL (ADSL) High speed internet connection from the phone company. Speed Stream 5360 or Speed Stream 4100 are external modems provided by SBC/AT&T for customers.
DVI Digital Video Interface connectors and cables come in several variations:
DVI-I Single Link connectors have (18 +5) pins.
DVI-I Dual Link connectors have (24 +5) pins.
DVI-D Single Link connectors have (18 +1) pins.
DVI-D Dual Link connectors have (24 +1) pins.
Ken's Electronics does not currently stock DVI cables but may be able to special order them for you.
Ethernet A term for connecting computers together. Early "wired" computer networks used DB15 connectors. Later Local Area Networks used "thinnet" (BNC) RG58 Coaxial (Plenum wire). Around 2000 twisted pair RJ45 connections became common for Local Area Networks using Cat 5/E or Cat 6 wires. Recent computer networks typically use wireless "Wi-Fi" (low power "Part 15" radio signals on the 2.4 or 5.8gHZ cordless telephone bands)/
External Modem: Computer end of coble plugs into DB-9 "Com" Port; Modem end of cable may be DB9 or DB25. (Some modem cables have both DB9 and DB25 connectors at one end).
Firewire IEEE1394 standard for connecting digital cameras and video cameras to computers; Firewire connectors look very similar to Mini-USB connectors.
Hardware accessories such as digital cameras, flatbed scanners, Keyboard, Mouse, Printer, Video, etc. to use with a computer. Software (operating programs) must be loaded into the operating system so the computer knows how to use the Hardware that is plugged into it.
HDMI High Definition Multimedia Interface cables and connectors exist in Standard, Mini, and Micro sizes. The HDMI 1.3 Cables that Kens Electronics stocks are backwards compatible (replace) 1.0, 1.1, & 1.2 versions. Ken's Electronics can special order some HDMI & DVI adaptors.
PH71-7503 HDMI 19-pin 3-ft long HDMI 2.0 cable | $13.40 |
PH44-545 (spec order) HDMI Converter Box inputs for Component Video (Red/Blue/Green) and Stereo Audio (Red=Right Channel & White=Left Channel), actively converts those signals to a 19-pin HDMI output jack for connection to recent TV's and Video Projectors.
HDTV High Definition TeleVision: cheap solution to receiving over the air TV is A Direct Video Broadcast tuner with CD-program for computer. An Outdoor Over The Air antenna is necessary to receive TV station Signals: use PH-FP100 to adapt the PAL antenna jack on a Artec DVB tuner to the F connection commonly used on TV antennas
LAN Local Area Network (often uses RJ45 "cat 5" or "cat 6" cables): see also related terms: DB15, Ethernet, NIC, RJ45, and Thinnet.
NIC Network Interface Card: Hardware for connecting to other computers. A "3-Com Ethernet XL Combo" has BNC, DB15, and RJ45 connections. The BNC connection is for "ThinNet" wire. The RJ45 connection is for Cat 5 twisted pair wire to operate at 10M-bit/second on "older" Windows 95/98 era computers.
Pentium 2 Computers with this type of microprocessor on the motherboard operate around 200Mhz and usually have RJ45 "Cat 5" or "Cat 6" Local Area Network connectors, (2) USB-A ports, (2) DB9 COM "RS232" serial ports, HD15 (VGA) Monitor connector, PS/2 style Keyboard & mouse jacks, DB25 Parallel (Printer) Port, and (Stereo 3.5 mm) Sound Card connection jacks.
Plug-N-Play computer standard that allows USB Cables to connect hardware to 2000 & newer computers
PS/1 This late 1980's IBM 286 computer used a standard P5D (5 Pin DIN) "AT" connector for the keyboard and a PS/2 (Mini-DIN 6 pin) connection for the mouse.
PS/2 This term is commly used to refer to a Mini-DIN 6 pin male connector because the IBM 286 model PS/2 was the first really popular Personal Computer to use these plugs for Keyboard & Mouse connections. Ken's Electronics stocks short adaptor cables to adapt keyboards & mouses with "older style" P5D plugs ("AT" style) to PS/2 plug devices to P5D plugs
RJ45 Eight Conductor Telephone type plug used tor "twisted pair" Local Area Network connections between computers. Cat-5, Cat-5E, or Cat-6 wire is used between RJ45 jacks in a building for Local Area Networks.
RS232 a standard for serial ports; DB25 "Parallel" (printer) connectors allow speed up to 115K-bits/second.
Also: DB9 COMmunications serial ports are commonly referred to as "RS232 connectors"
Software operating instructions that enable a computer to work with Hardware plugged into it. Software can be purchased "over the counter" in computer stores. or may be custom designed by computer programmers.
Sound Card: (3) Stereo 3.5MM jacks (mate =P353 plug): Microphone (pink or black), Line Level Input (blue), Speaker Output (green). (4 connections): black=line level out. (6 or more jacks used with surround sound)
Thinnet Thin Ethernet Network wire: May be regular RG58 50 ohm coax or "Plenum Wire" (high temperature rated for running thru hot air ducts in commercial buildings). Computer Connection for this is a BNC female socket; Use a BNC-Tee connector at every computer with a "50 ohm terminator" (dummy load) at the unused end of the BNC-Tee connectors. Operating speed of thinnet connections is 10M-bits/second or 1.2M-bytes/second with a limit of 180 meters of thinnet wire for a network of computers in a building.
VOIP Voice Over Internet Protocol: Hardware & Software to make "long distance" phone calls over the internet rather than paying a phone company "toll charges" to talk to somebody. This requires a high speed internet connection for reasonable sound quality.
PH70-025 Multimedia Headset Microphone . . . . $20,97
WAN (Wireless Area Network) WiFi: 11 USA channels (13 Europe channels, 14 Japan channels) on the 2.4GHz cordless telephone band to connect computers with radio signals. Comtelco makes a 3.5db gain omnidirectional antenna with normal N female connetor for the 2.4GHz band. D-Link Wireless G Router and Wireless G Desktop adaptor (802.11G 54Mbit) use reverse gender SMA antenna connectors. LinkSys sells 7db 2.4GHz antennas with reverse gender TNC connections. FCC part 15 rules require manufacturers to use non-readily available connections so individuals can't easily connect better antennas for more range! The Canary Wireless HS-20 is a neat gadget to find 2.4GHz WiFi "hotspots" signals!
Another cordless telephone band is 5.8GHz; older stuff may be on 900MHz.
