Tech Tip: Power Transformer Repair Note: Many power supply transformers used in Home Stereos and VCR's contain a fuse or thermal cutoff in series with the primary; often tucked under the insulation over the windings or between the primary and secondary windings! About 50% of the "Fried by Lightning" transformers are really okay--usually: a fuse or thermal cutoff has been blown! If the primary winding checks open "infinity" on an ohmmeter (and it doesn't have a strong "burnt" odor): we suggest that you carefully cut the insulation and look to see if there is a (pico) fuse or thermal cutoff that can be replaced. Be sure to order those inexpensive parts from Ken's instead of spending $lots of bucks$ for an expensive custom transformer!

Regulated Power Supplies: give a nearly constant voltage regardless of load current: this makes them "better" & a little more expensive than non-regulated power supplies. Some electronic equipment has built-in regulators to stabilize operation and prevent damage to sensitive circuitry and eliminate hum that might otherwise occur when using non-regulated power sources.
You can always use a regulated power supply to replace battery power and when you are not sure if the original power supply was regulated or unregulated?
You should only use unregulated power supplies when you know that the original power supply was non-regulated!

Power Transformers vs Plug Packs: What is the difference? Power Transformers are bare transformers (wire leads or solder lugs) intended to mount inside a cabinet of electronic equipment. Using a transformer to replace an AC plugpak requires that the transformer be enclosed in a metal or plastic box where the connections are insulated to protect you for safety reasons. Power cords should fit thru strain reliefs or rubber grommets so that rough edges don't cut thru the insulation.
Plug Packs (also known as "Plugpaks" or "Wall Warts") are molded plastic housings with prongs that fit directly onto an electrical outlet. They may contain only a small power transformer ("Class 2 AC Power Transformers" "AC Plug Paks") or may include a rectifier & filter capacitor (Class 2 DC Power Supplies "DC Plug Packs"). The output voltage of Unregulated Plug Paks varies according to the load current. A typical "12 Volt DC" plug pak shows nearly 18 Volts DC when measured with a VOM (no load) & drops to about 11 Volts DC when loaded at its maximum rated output current.

About 60% of all plug pak applications require a DCP-2155 (PH48-2155) connector: with a 2.1MM =.082" hole (about the size of a 5/64" drill bit) with a 5.5MM =.215" barrel diameter.
About 15% of all plug pak applications require a DCP-2555 (PH48-2555) connector: with a 2.5MM =.098" hole (about the size of a 3/32" drill bit) with a 5.5MM =.215" barrel diameter.
About 10% of all plug pak applications require a P-35 (PH48-P35) connector: this looks like a "mini-earphone" plug with a 3.5MM =.137" (about the size of a 9/64" drill bit) diameter.

Technical Tip: Travel Power Converters can be Power Transformers more than 2 pounds & expensive or Rectifier-type Power Reducers weigh less than 1 pound & are cheap.
Rectifiers can be used for portable Hair-Dryers but Radios, TV's, CD Players & Tape Recorders contain electronic circuitry that will be damaged if you plug them into AC power from a rectifier-type travel power reducer!
50-Hz vs. 60-Hz: Better-quality (AC-only) Tape Players and Recorders and things with clocks in them depend on the 60-Hz (USA) frequency to operate at the correct speed. If you take a 60-Hz USA-clock to Europe: it would lose 10 minutes per hour on the 50-Hz AC power! Better-quality tape recorders from the US that get plugged into Europe power will sound funny from running too slow!
Cheap Portable stuff made to operate on both AC power AND Batteries don't care if the AC power is 50-Hz or 60-Hz because their circuitry & motors operate on DC (Battery) power and are not dependent on the 50-Hz or 60-Hz to control the speed!
Two-Pole Single Phase Alternators operating at 3600 RPM produce 60-Hz AC power; if that alternator is operated at 3000 RPM--it produces 50-Hz AC power!
